Equine Elegance

As I find myself once again delightfully neck deep in the fashion and frivolities of the Magic Millions Race Carnival I am endlessly inspired by the beauty and rugged honesty that encapsulates the world of horse racing and its curious yet captivating culture. True equine elegance that lunges from the home hearth to high fashion seamlessly, without breaking its gait.

Here’s a piece I wrote this time last year for a local publication that I still reference when embarking on the styling of a fashion event or a clients home…

Whether it’s the fun, festivities and fashions of the Magic Millions Race Carnival or a not so far back trip to Southwest America, I’m not horsing around when I suggest you consider adding some equine inspired pieces to your interior. Symbolising travel, grandeur and freedom the horse has held a powerful place in our spiritual and physical world for thousands of years. By incorporating an equine accent to your wall, coffee table or even wardrobe will add a sense of earthly charm and mystical grandeur.

No designer, in my humble opinion, has harnessed the the powers and beauty of Equine chic quite like the master himself, Ralph Lauren. Calling upon the strong yet refined beauty of Equestrian design in to his interior and fashion ranges, Ralph Lauren is all about luxurious living. Source chunky knit throws for the arm of a wingback chair, lamps or cushions with a horse motif worked in to its design. Frame a worn horse shoe to display on a bookcase or coffee table for instant ‘haute horse‘ and great Feng Shui.  When dressing the ‘RL’ look think two toned riding boots worn with long linen skirts, hunting tweeds, cashmere and military accents, jodhpur style pants and the perennial white shirt.

On the other hoof, if Park Avenue Pony isn’t your thing then perhaps a mix of natural materials and timeworn pieces which when combined create a relaxed Ranch Style feel is. Keep an eye out for rustic elements with Western nuances to bring together this warm and welcoming theme. Large scale furniture resting on generous cowhide rugs, textured pillows and wooden tables. When choosing your color scheme take your cues from an organic and earthy inspired palette of forest greens, desert sands and rugged tans with black and red accents to ground this all-American design.
