Mirror Mirror On The Wall

Mirror mirror on the wall…. or on the buffet or as a jewelry box. Decorating with mirror and other reflective surfaces is a wonderful way to add intrigue and a feeling of space to many areas of the home.
A decorative or bold mirror is a wonderful focal point in a room whether sitting on a mantelpiece, above a bed or hung at the end of a dark hallway. Small rooms with little character benefit tremendously from a large hanging mirror or installing an entire wall of mirror creating a sense of expanse and depth.
One of the oldest and usually one of the first tricks decorators call upon when re inventing a space is to use mirror as it not only creates the illusion of instant square footage but catches and maximises any light source in dull rooms.
For example, when a mirror is hung in such a way that it reflects an existing window it creates the illusion of another window in the room. Mirror also frames and emphasises panoramic views colours or art on adjacent walls of a room doubling your decorating impact.
With the proper placement of mirrors in the home you can also direct Feng Shui flow enabling wealth, health and even a good night’s sleep to enter your life. Be mindful however when hanging mirrors in the southern areas of your home as this is believed to affect, in a negative way, your professional reputation and success. Likewise, hanging a mirror on the wall facing your bed is also a big Feng Shui ‘no no’ so do your research first!!! Don’t forget to make use of mirrors in outdoor areas too. Plain walls and areas that foliage doesn’t grow are often neglected and left unused when decorating but really are the perfect home for a mirror framed in chunky wrought iron or time worn timber.
Using mirror down the length of your dining table when hosting that special get together is a great way to create a cost effective and memorable table setting. Candles of varying height and shape or flowers in cut glass vessels placed along the mirrored runner will look elegant yet dramatic as mirror reflects light upwards and creates the illusion of depth and abundance.
So take an objective look at the areas in your home that could benefit from a reflective touch.
After all, clever decorating is a all about smoke and well… mirrors.
