Kitchen Kitsch

Just because you are up to your arms in flour and struggling with Fahrenheit to Celsius conversions for a recipe that you’ve never tried before doesn’t mean that you cant look fragrantly fabulous and culinary cool in the kitchen.
There are so many wonderful gadgets, gizmos and stylish kitchen accessories on the market these days that quite frankly should your soufflé sink, guests will be so enamoured by your kitchen kitsch that they won’t even notice.
I have been known to source soft furnishing inspiration from the kitchen aisle in many a home decor store, converting an embellished table runner in to the perfect bolster cushion.
From tea towels almost too beautiful to use to quirky napkins that add just the right amount of je ne sais quoi to your table setting these days Martha meets Missoni and Nigella definitely does Narciso.
With the advancement of technology in the textile industry both large corporate design companies and smaller cottage style businesses are for the first time, on the same playing field in the retail sector.
Missoni Home Target for example has just recently hit Australian shores enabling budding stylists and home decorating enthusiasts to tap in to high end style for an affordable price.
Call me a purest but I am always drawn to the smaller boutique style homeware companies that embody originality, practicality and enough nous to distract my trusting dinner guests from their culinary fate.
From wiping dishes to dressing the kids, the humble tea towel can style toddlers or the dining wall.
A simple hem and length of elastic makes for a quirky pre prep skirt. Likewise a witty quipped tea towel simply framed can be the perfect distraction in your kitchen or dining area.
Don’t even get me started on the colour co ordinated utensils and small appliances available on the market these days for I’d never stop styling the kitchen and dinner most definitely wont be served.
From fancy covers to keep your avocado from going brown in the fridge to measuring cups housed in the novel form of Babushka dolls being chained to the kitchen sink has never been so fashionable!
