And so it was:
From conception to copy, creation to couture the Marina Mirage Winter 2015 Magazine was a whirlwind journey of makeup and mayhem, a fashionably fraught frappé of long hours, spelling errors, hysterical laughter, caffeine overload and computer meltdowns. We got there and the result was most rewarding for all.
But seasons pass and spring stands in the wings awaiting her cue, its time to polish my creative marbles and focus on our next edition of the magazine. With only a week before our fashion shoot commences it is time to style the script that will best represent this very special boutique style shopping and lifestyle destination.
But first a tasselled wrap up and pictorial peak in to what was Winter 2015 at Marina Mirage.
Picture Perfect:

Choosing the correct talent or ‘look’ for a photo shoot or editorial spread is tantamount, particularly when you are representing a client that has loyal clientele of a particular demographic yet wishes to stretch their brand to embrace and engage a new style of customer.
Unless instructed otherwise, I always keep in mind that talent must be aspirational not unattainable. I style, co ordinate and create the overall concept of all my special event and fashion mediums with this sentiment firmly in mind.
It’s fun to step back and take a fresh approach when meeting a clients brief but I don’t always feel obliged to reinvent the wheel completely. There’s creative and ‘out there’ but the flip side experience can be just a plain old bumpy ride…
Less is More

Creating a beauty shot isn’t as hard as some would have you believe BUT I will say that when you have a talented photographer that truly understands lighting and you have cast your model / subject accordingly then all you need to complete your close up is clean makeup and simple styling.
Checklist:
What is the ‘hero’ piece in this shot? What are you drawing the audiences eye too? Is this a makeup shot or hair shot? Is the model or product the focus of shot? Will the subjects hands be seen? If fashion is visible, is the neckline or detail detracting from your shoot objective?
Choose your focus and keep it simple. You can always bump up the makeup or add a fabulous accessory for a more dramatic feel as the shoot progresses. Start clean and up the ante as you go.
For our beauty shot with Michelle we wished to convey the feel of Autumn whilst showcasing the latest makeup products and colours of the season. A simple prop drove the theme home. Natural Autumnal beauty.
#Flat Lay Fabulousness

For the love of a flat lay…
If there is one thing I really get off on and I think it is driven by my love of interior styling is a flat lay. The only difference between these two modes of expression is that you simply swing your ‘curation of curios’ on its axis and lay them flat on the floor instead of the mantelpiece!
This is where real story telling steps in and the stylist is able to convey a theme, season or product as creatively as gravity allows…
I have always found that flat lays find their own form and that sense of creative freedom is intoxicating. Rigid in its layout or fluid in its formation a good flat lay can bring humour and quirk to a clients shoot or magazine layout.
There is no ‘I’ in Team
From a fashion showcase to gala events, styling a clients home to creating an editorial spread or magazine there is no way I could even contemplate such tasks if it wasn’t for the support I have beside and behind me.
These special souls must be cherished as they are ridiculously hard to come by!
This year saw the formation of Our Empire (@our.empire / www.ourempire.com.au), a very special company that my business partner and I created to meet the needs of clients.
that wish to take a holistic marketing approach to their whole business. Times are a changing and with that it's time to meet the needs of clientele and business’ choosing ‘experience’ over blatant consumption of ‘things’.
Aspirational, attainable, authentic and attuned.
